The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas is mobilizing to help the victims of the unprecedented typhoon that devastated the Philippines last week. More than 10,000 are feared to have perished from the effects of the typhoon. The massive typhoon, one of the worst storms ever recorded, affected more than 4.28 million people in 270 towns and cities, according to the Philippines Social Welfare and Development Department. Many smaller beachfront communities have not yet been reached to determine the extent of the destruction, due to damage to roads and bridges. The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas has joined with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in responding to this natural disaster. Emergency disaster relief is being provided to the communities in the Philippines by JDC’s emergency teams already on the ground, working in coordination with the Filipino Jewish community to provide emergency humanitarian assistance.
The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas approved an initial emergency grant of $15,000 for the Philippines Typhoon Fund. In addition, the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas will be accepting donations. 100% of the funds collected will be directed to the Philippines Typhoon Fund.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to all the people of the Philippines impacted by this disaster,” said Dr. Hugh Bassewitz, Chair of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation. “Our Jewish Federation is joining others from across North America in working closely with the Jewish Federations of North America and JDC and will do whatever we can to help those who are suffering and in need of assistance.”
“The Jewish community has a very special relationship with the people of the Philippines,” noted Elliot B. Karp, President & CEO of the Jewish Federation. “At the start of WWII, the Philippines gave safe refuge to thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution and near certain death in the Holocaust. Our donation will provide needed resources and comfort to a nation and its people who mean so much to the Jewish people.”
